A biotechnologist is responsible for the modification and manipulation of living organisms in order to develop new products and more efficient practices. Job responsibilities of a biotechnologist include researching organisms at the molecular level, creation of new products or items from research findings, preparation of proposals, performing analysis using specific scientific processes, performing quality control measures, collecting of specimens and labels, and writing detailed reports outlining findings and the importance of the findings.
A bachelor's degree in biological sciences or a related field is required to be a biotechnologist. Helpful job skills include being detail-oriented, ability to remain patient and decisive, strong analytical skills, good communication skills, ability to think systematically and to problem-solve, strong IT skills, and ability to work both independently and in a team. The future job market outlook for a biotechnologist is strong and increasing.
