Internships are positions held primarily by current post-secondary students or recent graduates in which a company hires them to perform, for the most part, entry level tasks. The goal of these internships for the company is to have an employee to fulfill tasks normally held by a full-time worker, while the student gains valuable experience that can aid them in getting a future position. Job responsibilities for interns depend on the position or industry that they are working in. Generally, the tasks are administrative and centered on assisting the manager or supervisor with day-to-day operations of the business or department, as well as assisting with larger more prominent projects.
When entering an internship it is important to be ready to learn, and to ask questions when you are unsure of something. Communication, listening skills, and eagerness to try new things are key. Being able to stay focused and organized will also lead to a very beneficial work term for both the intern and the company.
