A laboratory technician assists staff with day-to-day operations such as maintaining glassware, updating logs and record books, resolving problems and supporting staff with their projects. Job duties as a laboratory technician include preparing of media, slides, smears and glassware on a daily basis, setting up laboratory equipment for staff, maintaining lab records, maintaining lab equipment, ensuring a safe and sanitary environment consistent with the lab procedures, examining data to resolve problems, and assisting in the completion of projects.
To pursue a career as a laboratory technician, an associate's degree in medical technology, life science, or other science fields is required, while a bachelor's degree in any of these fields would increase the chances of employment. Additional job skills include accuracy and attention to detail, understanding of the lab equipment and procedures, strong problem solving skills, and the ability to work with or without supervision.
