Laboratory Jobs

A laboratory assistant is responsible for assisting medical laboratory technologists in general laboratory tasks such as collecting, sorting, transporting and receiving of specimens and also performing simple testing procedures. Job responsibilities for a laboratory Assistant include labelling specimens and samples, operating lab equipment, cleaning lab equipment, collecting samples from patients for testing, preparing slides for examination, performing simple tests, inputting data into lab database, maintaining records of samples and tests completed, ensuring health and safety standards are met and ensuring that lab supplies are at appropriate inventory levels.

An associate's or bachelor's degree in laboratory science, applied science or a related field is required for a laboratory assistant job. Helpful job skills include attention to detail, active listening, strong communication skills (both verbal and written), strong problem-solving skills, strong critical thinking skills, some IT skills, and good analytical skills. The future job market outlook for a laboratory assistant is strong and increasing.
