Maintenance / Service Technician

Overview:

Maintenance/Service Technicians are the point of contact for making repairs on agricultural implements and lawn and garden equipment. They are responsible for implementing a basic diagnosis and executing it for clients. Maintenance/Service Technicians also work heavily with diesel engines, gasoline engines, and transmissions.

What responsibilities will I have?

  • Preform assembly, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment
  • Read and interpret technical manuals
  • Perform preventative maintenance to avoid operational failures of mechanical systems
  • Welding, metal fabrication and electrical assembly
  • Travel to work on equipment in the field as well as in shop setting
  • Schedule repair appointments with clients
  • Use computers and other technologies to investigate and repair mechanical equipment
  • Reassemble machines and equipment
  • Operate drill press, grinders, engine lathe, or other machines to modify parts tested or to fabricate experimental parts for testing
  • Maintains condition of vehicles, inventory, tools, and equipment

 

What education and training is required?

A high school diploma or more preferably an associate’s degree in industrial equipment technologies, mechanics, heavy equipment and transport technology, is required.

 

To pursue a career as a Maintenance/Service Technician:

The following high school courses are recommended:agricultural education, a focus on science, and mathematics.

 

Typical Employers:

Employed by farm equipment dealers and manufactures.

 

Future Job Market/Outlook:

The future outlook for Maintenance/Service Technicians is projected to be good to excellent depending on skills, certification and location.
