Job responsibilities of a merchandiser include planning which products will be brought into the stores, analyzing past sales trends in order to forecast the future needs, negotiating with suppliers for the products, determining the correct amount of stock for each outlet, monitoring the stock movement as well as analyzing possible price changes or promotions, maintaining strong relationships with suppliers and buyers, ensuring that inventory levels are appropriate, planning budgets for both the short term and long term, and taking measures to ensure quality standards are met.
A bachelor's degree in a related industry field is required to be a merchandiser. Helpful job skills include knowledge of products, strong customer service skills, good communication skills (both verbal and written), attention to detail, analytical skills, ability to multi-task, report writing ability, decision-making skills, and ability to work in a team.
