A field scout is responsible for assisting farmers in determining the quality and value of their fields and soil. Job responsibilities for a field scout include collecting samples of soil to analyze, maintaining field scouting machinery and equipment, preparing of geological maps of the fields, maintaining field scouting records, evaluating of the quality of soil for crop production purposes, supervising activities to do with the quality of the fields, and writing reports and recommendations based off of data collected.
A high school diploma is required to be a Field Scout. Helpful job skills include physical fitness, attention to detail, good communication skills (both written and verbal), active listening, strong critical thinking skills, and ability to work as independently. The future job market outlook for a field scout is fair.
